水の電気分解 Electrolysis of water

The other day I was asked a question from an 8th grader (a science loving student).
Why don’t we use NaCl (sodium chloride, salt, safe substance) instead of NaOH (sodium hydroxide, deleterious substance) at the experiment of electrolysis of water?
It is quite logical and it is a good and natural question to avoid the risk at the start of the experiment.
What is your answer to this question?
