新幹線駅として1988年3月13日に開業しました。建設工事費62億円はJRでなく、尾道市と周辺の市からの寄付金などでまかなわれました。

It was opened on March 13, 1988 as one of the Sanyo Shinkansen stations. The construction money of 6.2 billion yen was the donations from people and business in Onomichi and the surrounding cities.
