The weak yen, rising prices, and growing poverty caused by the government’s inadequate response

In political news coverage, I rarely see or hear about any proactive or fundamental measures the government is taking to address the weak yen and rising prices—issues that have plagued the public for the past 30 years.

All that the current Takaichi administration is reported to be tackling seems to revolve around the enactment of seemingly bold legislation and the wasteful spending of tax money. Furthermore, the focus is solely on Prime Minister Takaichi’s own falsification of her resume and her chief secretary’s creation of a defamatory video targeting the opponents during the election.

There is nothing—from yesterday’s record-low yen exchange rate on July 1 to the recent sharp increase in the number of young people living in poverty—that justifies endorsing the current Takaichi administration.

The Prime Minister’s English proficiency has also been the subject of ridicule, and I watched one of her YouTube videos. It was clear from her eye movements that she was simply reading from a script; she did not appear to deeply understand the material or be expressing it in her own words.

It’s also highly unnatural that the ministers and lawmakers around her—who were educated in USA and are highly proficient in English—would fail to notice these issues regarding her falsified resume and English proficiency.

They probably think it’s wiser to wait for Takaichi to bring about her own downfall.

Takaichi is a figure backed by former Prime Minister Abe—known for the “Mori, Kake, and Sakura” scandals—and former Prime Minister Aso—known for his “misreading of kanji.” When I see and hear her distasteful remarks and behavior as she tries to curry favor with former prime ministers and Trump, I can understand why things are the way they are.
