英語指導と学習(1)、言語研究ではない English Instruction and Learning (1): Not Language Research

私はこれまで約50数年間、主に化学と電気分野で研究、技術開発、システム開発の技術者として働き（）、海外17か国を訪問し（https://www.office-ktk.jp/）、英語が意思伝達言語として有効なことを認識しています。

私は英語を身につける、と言う時には、勉強する（study）ではなく、習得する（learn）という単語を使用するようにしています。

その理由は、英語の実用スキルを欲している私たちの多く、英語が母国語ではない日本人は、英語は研究の対象ではなく、身につけて日常で、あるいは仕事で正確で便利に意思疎通の道具として使いたいからです。

そのためには、習得する方法、条件、環境が大変大切ですので、今回を含めて４回シリーズで記述します。

私は英語を学問として捉えたことはありませんので、あくまで、一人の実用英語スキル習得希望者としての記述内容になります。

English Instruction and Learning (1): Not Language Research:

For over 50 years, I have worked as a researcher and engineer mainly in the fields of chemistry and electrical engineering, focusing on research, technological development, and system development (https://www.office-ktk.jp/home/).

I have visited 17 countries overseas and have come to recognize that English is an effective language for communication.

Therefore, when I talk about acquiring English, I make a point of using the word “learn” rather than “study.”

The reason for this is that many of us—Japanese people for whom English is not a native language—who seek practical English skills view English not as a subject of academic study, but as a tool for accurate and convenient communication in daily life and at work.

To that end, the methods, conditions, and environment for acquiring these skills are extremely important, so I will discuss them in a four-part series, including this installment.

I have never viewed English as an academic discipline, so the content of this series is written from the perspective of someone seeking to acquire practical English skills.
