基礎研究費、ノーベル賞受賞者の叫び Funding for Basic Research, Nobel Laureate's Plea

2025年ノーベル化学賞を受賞する京都大の北川進特別教授（74）が、ストックホルムでの公式記者会見で、「基礎研究が成果を挙げ、活用されるには25年ほどかかる」とした上で、長期にわたる資金的支援が必要との認識を示した。

基礎研究費の大幅カットは安部首相の時に行われ、それ以降、菅首相は学術会議の人選にも介入した。その後の首相たちもその姿勢を改めてはいない。政治家には基礎研究の重要さが認識できない、評価できないのだから研究者の主張を聞き入れるべきです。

国家が着実に健全に発展するためには基礎教育が必要であるのと同じで、国家の力量としての経済、科学力は基礎研究を通じて生まれる成果に依存します。

中国、ロシア、北朝鮮のように他国からの基礎研究の果実だけを取り込み、自国で基礎研究努力をしないような国家に日本をしてはいけない。

At the official press conference in Stockholm, Kyoto University's Special Professor Susumu Kitagawa (74), who won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, stated that “it takes about 25 years for basic research to yield results and be put to use,” expressing the view that long-term financial support is necessary.

Significant cuts to basic research funding occurred during Prime Minister Abe's administration, and since then, Prime Minister Suga has also intervened in the selection of members for the Science Council of Japan. Subsequent prime ministers have not altered this stance. Since politicians cannot recognize or evaluate the importance of basic research, they should heed researchers' arguments.

Just as basic education is essential for a nation's steady and sound development, a nation's economic and scientific strength as a national capability depends on the outcomes generated through basic research.

Japan must not become a nation like China, Russia, or North Korea that only absorbs the fruits of basic research from other countries without making its own efforts in basic research.
