中国との付き合い　　Dealing with China

ここ一ヶ月で中国に関係のある方、2名に会いました。

1人は中国で司法試験に合格後、来日し、日本の税理士試験にも合格し、日本国内の大手税理士事務所で活躍していた方で、現在は日本の会社で監査役として社外取締役を務めている方です。

他の一人は中国からの弦楽器、二胡の演奏者、中国で音楽も勉強した日本人です。

いずれも、素晴らしい方々で、最近の政治や軍事分野などでの日中関係の冷え込み、不仲とは関係ありません。

更に、昨日は上海で会社を経営している社長さんと、日本国内で、電話で情報交換しました。

彼によれば25年前の2000年当初の一般市民の対日感情は現在よりはずっと良かった、25年で確実に悪化した、とのことです。

この四半世紀の間、中国は自国の若者への教育を通じて徹底的に対外・対日教育を行い、自信を得て、イギリスとの国際的約束を反故にしてまで、香港の早期取返しを実現しました。そして、台湾に関する一国意識を高めた結果、今日の一連の対日行動を取ることができているようです。

さて、同じ25年間の間、ほとんど何もせず円安、長期不況、物価高の日本は権威主義国である中国、ロシア、北朝鮮にどう対処しますか。

Over the past month, I met two individuals connected to China.

One passed the bar exam in China, came to Japan, passed the Japanese tax accountant exam, and worked at a major Japanese tax accounting firm. She now serves as an outside director and auditor at a Japanese company.

The other is a Japanese musician who plays the Chinese string instrument, the erhu, and also studied music in China.

Both are wonderful individuals, seemingly unaffected by the recent cooling of relations and discord between Japan and China in political and military spheres.

Furthermore, yesterday I exchanged information over the phone in Japan with a company president based in Shanghai.

According to him, ordinary citizens' feelings toward Japan in the early 2000s, 25 years ago, were much better than they are now, meaning it is much worse now.

Over this quarter-century, China has thoroughly indoctrinated its youth through education about foreign relations and Japan, gaining confidence to the point of reneging on international agreements with Britain to achieve the early return of Hong Kong.

Now, how will Japan, which has done almost nothing amid a weak yen, prolonged recession over the same 25-year period, and high prices over the same 25-year period, deal with authoritarian nations like China, Russia, and North Korea?
