この記事はファクシミリの消費電力の99.3%が（受信と送信の）待機のために無駄に使用され、実際の送信に利用される電力は僅か0.7%である、との内容です。

インターネット、デジタル時代の今日、消費電力は毎年10%以上増加していますが、その多くは待機電力消費です。皆さんが使用しているスマホ、パソコンなどのデジタル機器、大規模データセンターなどがその責任を負っています。

待機電力消費は気づかずに、その消費が当然と考えられていますが、その無駄な使用を正当化、当然視してはいけません。これは地球人として対処すべき、地球規模の大問題です。

The attached article is a 31-year-old Nikkei newspaper piece predicting that the energy waste of “waiting” would become a big burden in the information age.

Today, that prediction has come true, and a share of the responsibility lies with all of us—including you, the smartphone user—as part of the vast number of people using them.

This article states that 99.3% of a fax machine's power consumption is wasted on standby (for receiving and sending), with only a mere 0.7% used for actual transmission.

In today's internet and digital age, power consumption increases by over 10% annually, with a significant portion being standby power consumption. The digital devices you use, such as smartphones and computers, along with large-scale data centers, bear responsibility for this.

Standby power consumption often goes unnoticed, and its use is taken for granted. However, we must not justify or accept this wasteful usage as normal. This is a global-scale problem that we, as inhabitants of Earth, must address.
