シジュウカラのコミュニケーション　Communications by Great Tits

11月中旬、我家のハナミヅキの葉もやっと紅葉の季節になりました。

バックの山々はまだまだ緑色ですが、下旬以降の寒さでその色は変化してくるでしょう。

このハナミヅキの木に設置しているシジュウカラ用の巣にはペアが時々、様子伺いに来ています。

産卵子育て時期は半年後ですが、下見を欠かしません。私たちの来春の楽しみです。

ところで、

東京大学の鈴木俊貴准教授は世界で初めて動物が言葉を話すことを突き止め、動物言語学を開拓した第一人者で、シジュウカラの鳴き声が200パターン以上あり、単語を組み合わせ、文法に従った言葉を使っていること、身振り言語を持っていることなどを突き止めました。

私も鈴木研究室にメールしたこともあり、返事ももらいました。

私は鈴木准教授が明らかにしたことを毎年、目の前で観察しながら、巣内に設置したカメラも使って子育ての様子を見ながら、確認しています。真夜中、巣の中の母シジュウカラの子育て奮闘姿には大変感動します。

添付写真の中央の巣が、シジュウカラが毎年使用している巣で、この中で今年の春育ったヒナたちです。

Mid-November, the leaves on our Hanamizuki (Dogwood) tree have finally turned autumn colors.

The mountains in the background are still green, but the cold after the end of the month will surely change their hue.

A pair of great tits occasionally come to check on the nest box we've set up for them in this snowbell tree.

Though the egg-laying and rearing season is still half a year away, they never skip their reconnaissance. It's something for us to look forward to next spring.

Associate Professor Toshitaka Suzuki of the University of Tokyo was the first in the world to prove that animals can speak words, pioneering the field of animal linguistics. He discovered that great tits have over 200 vocal patterns, combine words, use language following grammar rules, and possess body languages.

The attached photo shows Associate Professor Suzuki's TV appearance and interview yesterday, November 19th.

I've even emailed the Suzuki Lab myself, receiving the return mail.

Each year, I observe what Associate Professor Suzuki revealed right before my eyes, while also confirming them by watching the nestlings grow via a camera installed inside the nest. At midnight, I was greatly moved by the sight of the mother great tit's tireless efforts to raise her young in the nest.

The nest in the center of the attached photo is the one the great tits use every year, where the babies were raised in spring, this year of 2025.
