最新購読本、「ネアンデールタール人は私たちと交配した」 My latest subscription book; Neanderthal Man in Search of Lost Genomes

これは2022年度ノーベル生理学・医学賞を受賞したスバンテ・ペーボ博士の著書です。

原書のタイトルは「ネアンデルタール人、失われたゲノムを求めて」です。

先週、博士の講義（講演）の通訳後、すぐに購入手配し、本日23日に読み始めました。（順序とすれば通訳前に熟読しておくべきでしたが。）

一般書化されているとはいえ、専門的な単語や内容を正確に理解するには同じ文章を２、３回繰り返し読む必要もあり、速読は不可能です。

若い時に私も化学を学び、研究業務に携わっていましたので、彼の研究、実験作業姿勢、結果の再現性と正確さが求められる作業の言葉にできないほどの困難さは少し理解できます。その意味ではこれは大変興味深い本、内容ですから、最後まで読む意欲は失わないでしょう。

This book is by Dr Svante Pääbo, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

After interpreting Dr. Pääbo's lecture last week, I purchased the book and started reading it today (the 23rd). In hindsight, I should have read it thoroughly before interpreting.

Although it is intended for a general audience, accurately understanding the specialized terms and content requires reading the same passages two or three times, making speed reading impossible.

Having studied chemistry and conducted research in my youth, I have some understanding of the immense challenges involved in his research and experimental procedures, as well as the rigorous demands for reproducibility and accuracy. In that sense, this is a very intriguing book with compelling content, so I doubt I will lose the motivation to finish it.
