ハロハロと友人 in フィリピン　Halo-halo and Friends in the Philippines

添付新聞記事（8月18日）にも紹介されているように、ハロハロはフィリピンを代表するデザートで、かき氷に様々な甘い具材を混ぜて食べるものです。タガログ語で「混ぜこぜ」という意味の「ハロ (halo)」が名前の由来です。私の好みの一つで、今でも懐かしいです。

フィリピンは仕事と友人との交流で良く出かけた国で、好きな国の一つです。

10年前にフィリピン出身の外科医、アメリカ在住の友人、がフィリピンに帰郷した時に、私も久しぶりにフィリピンに出かけ、この最良の友だちと奥さんに再会し、マニラの大きなショッピングモールで、このハロハロを口にしました。

それ以前、17年前、2008年に商用で2008年5月にフィリピン大使館に当時の駐日フィリピン大使を訪ねました。

更に、その前の1990年代には地元福山の企業のセブ島での現地工場建設で毎月のように大阪―マニラーセブ島を往復し、当時のラウレル副大統領を表敬訪問、友人で恩人の弁護士のJ. G. チュン氏に大変お世話になりなました。

そして、

昨年の9月にはフィリピン出身で現在はアメリカ在住の医師、ロイダ・メディーナと息子の大学教授、アーニー・メディーナJr.を尾道に迎え、楽しい時間を過ごしました。

更に、所有するテナントビルの一角にはフィリピン国旗を掲げる「尾道アジアン店」に入居いただいています。

As mentioned in the attached newspaper article on August 18th, it is a traditional Filipino dessert consisting of shaved ice mixed with various sweet ingredients. The name comes from the Tagalog word "halo," which means "mix." It is still one of my favorites.

I have frequently visited the Philippines for work and to meet friends, and it is one of my favorite countries.

Ten years ago, when a Filipino surgeon, the best friend of mine who has now been living in the US returned to the Philippines, I visited the country again after a long time. I reunited with him and his wife and enjoyed halo-halo at a large shopping mall in Manila.

Prior to that, in May 2008, I visited the Philippine Embassy for business purposes to meet with then Philippine Ambassador to Japan at the time.

Furthermore, back in the 1990s, I traveled frequently between Osaka, Manila, and Cebu Island for the construction of a factory for a local company here in Fukuyama on Cebu Island, and I paid a courtesy visit to then-Vice President Laurel and received great assistance from my benefactor, Attorney J. G. Chung.

On top of that, last September, we welcomed Dr. Loida Medina, a physician and her son, Ernie Medina Jr., a university professor now living in USA. We had a wonderful time with them in Onomichi.

Additionally, the “Onomichi Asian Store,” which flies the Philippine flag, is housed in a tenant building we own.
